Ben Hawkins (Nick Stahl). Hawkins is a young fugitive with a 'gift' of healing who is taken in by a travelling carnival when his mother dies and her farm in Oklahoma, ruined by the dustbowl, is taken from her.

Stahl has most recently appeared as John Connor in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003).

Brother Justin Crowe (Clancy Brown). A preacher in Mintern, California, Justin also seems to possess the power to cause 'miracles' and believes he has been given a mission to preach to society's dispossessed.

Brown is best known for his role as the Kurgan in Highlander (1986), but also appeared in cult classics The Adventures of Buckeroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension (1984) and the lesser known Cast A Deadly Spell (1991) in which magic is an integral part of life in the 1940s. He starred in the short lived science fiction series Earth 2 (1994) and has contribued his voice talents to a number of animated characters in cartoons and video games.

Samson (Michael J. Anderson). Samson is the manager of a travelling carnival and ear to the unseen 'management'.

As well as the Little Man From Another Place in Twin Peaks (1990), Anderson also had a guest star spot in the second season episode of The X-Files (1993), Humbug (which also featured a 'freak' show).

Sofie (Clea DuVall). Sofie is a tarot card reader who can communicate telepathically with her comatose mother.

DuVall has had roles in The Faculty (1998) and a first season episode of Buffy: the Vampire Slayer (1997).

Ruthie (Adrienne Barbeau). Ruthie is a source of information and guidance for Hawkins, who shares some of his secret with her. She manages the retarded strong man, Gabriel (Brian Turk).

Barbeau has been in masses and masses of stuff including Babylon 5 and Star Trek: Deep Space 9, and was the voice of Selina Kyle/Catwoman in Batman: The Animated Series.

Professor Lodz (Patrick Bauchau). Although blind, the absinthe drinking Lodz can 'see' a sleeper's dreams and fears that Hawkins is a danger to the carnival.

Jones (Tim De Kay). Head of the rouster gang.

Gecko (John Fleck). The lizard man.

Fleck also plays a Suliban on Star Trek: Enterprise.


Iris (Amy Madigan). Brother Justin's sister and aide in his mission.

Alex & Caladonia (Karyne & Sarah Steben). The conjoined twins.

Scudder (Kelly Nyks). Gentleman geek. A significant, yet shadowy, figure who appears in Hawkin's (and Brother Justin's) dreams and had connections with Hawkin's mother.
